Daddy Long Legs boutique hotel

Situated right in the middle of Long Street, one of Cape Town’s liveliest streets, where creatives, students and travelers congregate to shop, dine and socialize, is the Daddy Long Legs boutique hotel.

Each room of this boutique hotel has its own shower and toilet, air conditioning and the type of bed and percale linen found in any luxury hotel accommodation, but this is where the comparison ends. Each of the 13 rooms has been uniquely decorated by either an artist, poet, musician, photographer, designer or creative.

Artist and curator (of among other things, the 2003 YDEsire art event in which art took over the Cape Town Castle for one night) Kim Stern, chose to decorate her room with several microphones, one on a stand and the others dangling from the ceiling and a TV, for singing Karaoke. Fake green grass carpets the room and white brail dots are placed on the white walls, the words to a song perhaps?

Performance artist and sculptor Daya Heller lined the walls of her boutique hotel room with A4 laminated photographs of sunsets. The bright walls are reflected in the kinkily mirrored ceiling.

Those who frequent Long Street, or even the well known bar, Rafikki’s, will be familiar with the murals of Buffy Braveheart. Fans of this underground artist’s fantasy themed art will not be disappointed with his room, which of course contains his murals.

Unlike a luxury boutique hotel, the Daddy Long Legs functions more like a boutique backpackers. It has a laid back communal bar and lounge area, where travelers are able to interact and the décor of the boutique hotel is far more inclusive of the laid back, creative spirit of Long Street than other Cape Town boutique hotels. For travelers it offers an authentic Cape Town experience, unparalleled in any 5 star boutique hotels in Cape Town.
