If you are lucky enough to have found a Cape Town holiday house by the ocean, you will surely be tempted to spend every day of your vacation soaking up the sun on Cape Town’s pride, our gorgeous beaches. While this is definitely tempting, during your stay in Cape Town be sure to tear yourself away from the golden sands for one day to appreciate some of Cape Town’s other attractions. For example, if you are staying near one of our best beaches, Clifton Cape Town, then a well known attraction for nature lovers, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens will be just a short drive from your Clifton villas. Kirstenbosch was originally founded in 1913 to preserve South Africa’s unique flora ad was the first botanical garden with this motivation, after viewing our indigenous vegetation, you will surely agree. The beauty of the gardens is renowned and is displayed beautifully at the base of the Eastern slope of Table Mountain.
Kirstenbosch stretches over 528 hectares and is the largest of South Africa’s national gardens and one of the leading botanical gardens in the world. The landscape design encourages walking with its many pathways and picturesque ponds spread over rolling lawns, of which 4700 of the estimated 20 000 species of indigenous South African flora.
You may want to drag yourself away from the beach on one of Cape Town’s overcast days, but be warned the Kirstenbosch gardens are often busier on these days as horticulturalists and flora-knowledgeable visitors eager to view fynbos in its natural habitat, flock to the gardens. The period between August and October are considered to be the best time of the year to visit the botanical gardens, as the King protea (considered the king of fynbos) is in full bloom.
The Botanical Society Conservatory contains many species which cannot be grown outdoors, allowing visitors to view a variety of flora.
