When visiting Clifton, be sure to pop down to one of Clifton’s 4 beaches, where beautiful white sand and gym honed bodies can be found. The water can be quite chilly, with an average temperature of between 12-16 degrees, but this does not stop the avid body and board surfers. The strongest surf can be found at 1st beach and diminishes as it goes on to 4th beach.
Clifton 4th beach is the most popular beach and is known for its glamorous crowds, of which celebrities can often be spotted, as can many luxury yachts, on a calm day. Second beach attracts gay men and as Cape Town is the gay capital of South Africa, there is bound to be much hot male eye candy on any given beach day. Families and beach volleyball players tend to be found at Clifton 3rd beach, while the 1st beach draws a mixed crowd. Clifton fourth beach has been awarded blue flag status in recognition of its environmental, safety and tourist standards.
Many of the Cape Town villa accommodation found above Clifton’s 1st and 2nd beaches are quite small, this is attributed to the fact that the area was partitioned by the City of Cape Town for returning soldiers who had fought in World War 1. They are divided by narrow flights of stairs which run between Victoria Road and the various beaches. These houses, many of which have been converted into quality Cape Town guest houses, are some of the most exclusive accommodation in Cape Town, despite only being accessible by narrow stairs and often, no garages, still fetch very high prices on the property market.
As many who have stayed in a Clifton Cape Town beach house can attest, the Cape Town vacation rentals may be small, but they are situated atop cliffs which allow views of one of the best beaches, rated time and again as one of the top 10 beaches in the world and that is more than any Five star hotels in Cape Town can offer.
